Welcome
to
Saint
Athanasius
School.
A MESSAGE
FROM
OUR PRINCIPAL
Saint Athanasius School is a Catholic, parochial, non-profit
elementary school in the Diocese of Brooklyn. We look to our patron for inspiration in the quest to develop in our students
Christian attitudes and behaviors, and to convey an understanding of our faith. It is our goal to nourish the conviction
that Christ is encountered in all aspects of our lives. We believe that through active participation in the Liturgy
of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we bear public witness to our faith; through our life of Christian service,
we demonstrate gospel values.
Emphasis is placed on the spiritual growth of our students.
A sequential religion program inculcates knowledge of the truths of our Catholic faith. Frquent participation in liturgical
celebrations is part of our school program. Prayer and meditiation is an integral part of our daily school life.
Christian values are fostered through the atmosphere provided by adult role models. As Christians we strive to recognize
the dignity of each person. Although spiritual and academic growth are paramount here at St. A's, our children have
the ability to interact socially. There are many activities such as school dances, breakfasts with Santa and the Easter
Bunny, school trips, retreat days, and school assemblies.
Our school is continuously blessed in many ways, our enrollment
continues to increase and the benevolence of so many extremely generous people has enabled Catholic Education to thrive here
at Saint Athanasius. Monsignor David L. Cassato, Pastor, and I work in unison with an educated, dedicated, faculty and
staff to provide the children of our Parish School with quality Catholic Education.
Mrs. Lorraine Garone-Tesoro, M.A., M.S.Ed.

A DESCRIPTION OF OUR SCHOOL
Saint Athanasius School provides an atmosphere where
students intellectual abilities and talents are developed to their fullest. Programs
are developed from melding New York State and Diocesan standardized curricula. These
programs focus on involving the students in their learning experience. Teaching
techniques include the latest educational theories to ensure that we reach each student via their personal learning capabilities. Opportunities are consistently provided which encourage creativity, responsibility,
scholarship, leadership, citizenship and the growth of the decision-making process through
teaching of the critical thinking process.
Saint Athanasius School provides class settings,
which allow for comfortable individualized instruction. Every student from Nursery
to grade eight attends gym, art, library and computer on a regular basis with a certified teacher. Students actively participate in the Sacramental Program as well as planning liturgical services. They are also offered the opportunity to join our childrens choir, which is under
the leadership of our parish musical director. Students are provided with the
opportunity to develop their citizenship and responsibility through an active Student Council, which includes service to the
school itself and the local community. Our after-school program provides our
students with a greater opportunity to reinforce daily lessons under the supervision of teachers in a social atmosphere.
Our Learning Center provides early intervention
for those students who have learning differences. These students are given the
opportunity to attend classes that reinforce basic skills, teach adaptive strategies and prepare students to receive and maintain
grade level standards. Students attend class in a small eight to one setting
and are taught with a multi-sensory approach. Through a collaborative relationship
with the New York City Board of Education, qualified students are provided with additional services which include, English
as a Second Language (ESL), remedial mathematics, guidance and counseling provided by a psychologist, with no additional costs
to the parents of these students.
Saint Athanasius invites those students, who
exhibit exceptional academic or creative ability, to participate in the Diocesan Aquinas Program. Students in this program design and research projects of special interest.
The work of this group, The Minds of the Millennium, is shared with the school community through planned assemblies
and displays. This group also has the opportunity to display their work at the
Diocesan Aquinas Expo.
Saint Athanasius School does not sponsor
an extra-curricular athletic program. Our students are given the opportunity
to participate in various sports through our parish sports programs.
