The Ministry of Cantor

THE "ENGLISH" CHOIR
provides music at the 11:30a.m. Mass in the Upper Church.
Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings.  This choir, vested in traditional choir robes, sings more traditional and classical pieces in English and Latin, however, contemporary pieces are also presented.  The choir sings from the choir loft, although one piece is sung from the sanctuary, accompanied by piano.
Director: Mr. Steven LaPlante, M.Mus

CANTORS
lead the community in prayer, even when the choir is present.  Cantors are trained by the Director of Music.  A sepate rehearsal is required for those who minister as cantor, separate from weekly choir rehearsal. Cantors also vest in traditional choir robes.  Cantors also proclaim the Psalm from the Ambo.
Director: Mr. Steven LaPlante, M.Mus

THE FOLK GROUP
provides music for the 10a.m. mass and leads music from the sanctuary.  Piano, Guitar and Flute accompaniment enables the assembly to sing hymns from Oregan Catholic Press' Music Issue.  Traditional hymns are sometimes adapted and given a new beat in order to preserve the music history of the church.  These hymns are usually taken from J.S. Paluch's Seasonal Missalette or provided on a Worship Program.  English style hand bells are used during Advent and Lent to accompany tradional hymns such as O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Attende Domine, and even the Gregorian Chant, Agnus Dei.
Directors: Pastoral Associate John Fruner.

THE MONTHLY PRAISE AND WORSHIP MUSICIANS
lead the assembly in lively songs used weekly as part of our Charismatic Prayer Group.  Being exposed to not only Roman Catholic hymn sources, this monthly experience inspires congregants of all ages.  Hymns are provided on a Worship Program and are sung to the accompaniment of electric guitar and accordion.
Directors: Pat and Connie Costagliola.

THE "ITALIAN"CHOIR
provides music at the 11:30a.m. Italian Mass in the Lower Church.  Drawing most of its hymns from La Famiglia Cristiana: Nella Casa del Padre, the choir leads music from the sanctuary, vested in choir robes.  Weekly rehearsals are held each Monday at 8p.m. in the Lower Church.  The "Italian" Choir provides Organ accompanied music for English-Italian bilingual Masses as well as major feasts of the parish, joining with the "English" and "Spanish" Choirs.
Director:  Mr. Tony Vigilante

THE "SPANISH" CHOIR
leads music at the 10a.m. Spanish Mass, in the Lower Church.  Using Oregon Catholic Press' Flor y Canto,  the choir sings from the sanctuary, vested in choir robes, to the beat of accoustic guitars, bass guitars, bongos, and keyboard.  Hymns are also provided on Worship Programs featuring the rich Latino heritage of regional Spanish hymns sung throughout Latin America and South America.

Mr. Steven LaPlante, M. Mus.
Director of Music Ministries

The Choir of St. Athanasuis has been under the direction of Steven Laplante for the past four years. Steven began his training on the pipe organ at McGill University in Montreal. He started winning competitions within three years, including Second Place Winner in the 1996 National Competition in Canada and subsequently becoming a finalist at the Bach International competition in Switzerland.

Steven came from a religious family, being exposed to liturgical ministry as Altar Server, Cross Bearer and now being a Choirmaster. Being the Choirmaster, Steven enjoys interacting with various people.  Steven also finds involvement in the choir to be a spiritual journey that the choir shares, creating a special bond between its members.  Steven also feels that music brings an important dimension to the service, Its the most abstract form of art, its nothing we can touch or see... music brings life to the service, its a wonderful symbol of God's presence among us.

YOUTH HAND BELL CHOIR

The Youth Hand Bell Choir leads music at special celebrations such as the Thanksgiving Family Mass,  Christmas Eve Family Mass,  Easter Sunday Family Mass and Pentecost Celebrations.  The choir works with the Family Mass Choir. For information call Ext. 24 of the rectory and speak to Pastoral Associate John Fruner.

I AM MUSIC!
I am music, I make the world laugh, wonder and worship.  I tell the story of love, the story of hate, the story that saves and the story that destroys.  I am the incense upon which prayers float to heaven.  I am the smoke which palls over the field of battle where men and women die with me on their lips.  I am close to the marriage altar, and when the grave opens I stand nearby.  I call the wanderer home, I rescue the soul from the depths; I open the lips of lovers and through me the dead whisper to the living. I speak through the birds of the air, the insects of the field, the crash of waters upon the rock ribbed shores, the sighing of the wind in the trees, and I am even heard by the soul that knows me in the clatter of the wheels on city streets. I am Music!
